What you get from an address
One lookup gives the numbers a roof replacement is priced on. Each plane is numbered on the aerial and listed with its direction, pitch and area.

How it measures a roof
Roof area
- Google maps roof planes from aerial imagery for most US addresses. Each plane comes with its pitch and its sloped area.
- The area is already sloped, so there's no pitch multiplier to apply. Squares are the total area divided by 100.
- Small sections such as vents and dormer cheeks stay in the total. They aren't listed as planes.
- Planes under 2/12 are flagged as low slope. They need a different roofing system.
- The steepest plane is flagged when it's over 8/12.
Squares and waste
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Order more than you measure to cover cuts, hips, valleys and starter courses.
Measured Bid starts with a waste allowance for each roof type, and you can change each one. On the model house, 23.4 squares becomes 27.4 squares to order.

When the numbers are off
Aerial data is quick and consistent. It can still miss things, so the result tells you when to look harder.
What the aerial can't see
- Changes since the imagery was taken. The result shows the imagery year and warns when it's 5 or more years old.
- Roof sections missing from the data. The result flags a house with less than 90% of its roof mapped.
- Edges hidden under trees or deep shade.
- Layers of old roofing, decking condition and ventilation.
When a paid report is the better tool
- Insurance work that needs a formal report.
- Complex roofs where you order every material straight from the numbers.

Is the roof measurement tool free?
Yes. You can measure up to five new houses an hour without an account. Measuring the same house again doesn't count toward that limit.
How accurate is it?
Roof area comes from the sloped area of each plane in Google's aerial roof data, so no pitch multiplier is needed. We haven't published a roof-area test yet. Our published test covers gutter footage, and it's on the accuracy page. Confirm the roof on site before you order materials.
Does it replace a measurement report?
For a first estimate, often yes. For insurance work, or when you order materials straight from the numbers on a complex roof, a paid report or an on-site measurement is the better tool.
Can it measure gutters too?
Yes. The gutter calculator uses the same roof data to find the edges that need gutters and counts the downspouts.
Can I put this on my website?
