How to calculate gutter footage and downspouts
Every gutter estimate starts with two numbers: the feet of gutter and the number of downspouts. The calculator works them out in this order.
- Find every roof edge where water runs off the house. Skip edges that drain onto a lower roof.
- Measure each run and add them up. That's the feet of gutter.
- Count each separate gutter: at least one downspout, with one for every 35 ft or part of it.
- Use at least 2 downspouts, even on a small house.
- Allow about 10 feet of downspout pipe per story, plus 2 feet for the elbows and extension, on every drop.

How the footage is measured
Gutter footage
- The calculator reads the roof planes Google has mapped from aerial imagery. Each plane has a slope, a direction and a size.
- A gutter run goes wherever a plane drains off the house. Edges that drain onto another roof are generally left out. A high upper edge above a lower roof can still count.
- Each run gets a number on the map. Uncheck a run that won't get a gutter and the totals update.
- On a two-story house, runs on a lower roof are marked. Their downspouts drop one story less.
- Roofs with many sections get a small allowance for corners and returns. The result shows the feet it added.

- Gutters hidden under trees or deep shade.
- Additions built after the imagery was taken. The result shows the imagery year.
- Roof sections missing from the data. The result flags a house with less than 90% of its roof mapped.

- Detached garages and sheds. The calculator measures the house you confirm.

FAQ
How many downspouts do I need?
Each separate gutter gets at least one downspout, with one for every 35 feet or part of it and at least two per house. Typed footage uses the total length only. Change the feet per downspout to match your gutter size and how much roof drains to each outlet.
Is the gutter calculator free?
Yes. You can measure up to five new houses an hour without an account. The typed-footage calculator has no limit.
How accurate is the footage?
We tested quoted gutter footage against 9 invoiced gutter jobs. The jobs came from one gutter company that uses Measured Bid. Eight were full replacements and one was a repair and guards job. The median absolute error was 14.2% and the mean absolute error was 16.2%. We also used these jobs to tune the engine. Treat every number here as a starting point and confirm it on site.
Does it include a detached garage?
No. The calculator measures the house you confirm. In Measured Bid, an estimate can add a detached garage or shop with a tap on the map.
