How to calculate siding squares
Siding is ordered by the square: 100 square feet of wall. The calculator gets there in five steps.
- Measure the wall perimeter. From the air, that's the roof outline less the overhang on each side (18 inches to start).
- Multiply by the wall height. The calculator starts at 9 feet per story.
- On gable roofs, add the triangles above the end walls.
- Take off windows and doors. The calculator starts at 10% for siding.
- Divide by 100 for squares of siding.

How it gets wall area from above
Wall area
- Wall length comes from the roof outline, less the roof overhang on each side.
- Wall height is the story count times the height per story. You pick the stories after you confirm the house.
- Gable roofs add the triangles above the end walls, from the roof's width and pitch.
- Windows and doors come off as a share of the wall: 10% for siding and 15% for paint to start.
- For L-shaped and T-shaped houses the outline still gives the right perimeter in most cases, because each corner in the walls adds as much length as it removes.
What it can't see
Wall area from the roof outline is a fast starting number. Walk the house before you order.
Measure these on site
- Individual windows, doors and garage doors.
- Stone, brick or other walls that won't get siding.
- Walls that step down a slope, like a walkout basement.
- Porches, bump-outs and walls tucked under a roof line.
- Detached garages and sheds. The calculator measures the house you confirm.

- Painters and siding crews deduct different shares for openings. On the model house that's 1,666 sq ft for siding and 1,574 sq ft for paint.

FAQ
How many squares of siding do I need?
Divide the net wall area by 100. That gives squares of wall to cover. Add a waste allowance for cuts and trim before you order. Your supplier or the siding maker lists one for each product.
Is the siding calculator free?
Yes. You can measure up to five new houses an hour without an account. Changing the story count on the same house doesn't count toward that limit.
How exact is the wall area?
It's estimated from the roof outline and the story count, less a share for windows and doors. It doesn't see individual openings, stone or brick sections, or walls that step down a slope. We haven't published a wall-area test yet. Measure the walls on site before you order.
Does it work for exterior painting?
Yes, as a starting point. Painters usually deduct a bigger share for windows and doors. Measured Bid's painting estimates start at 15% and siding at 10%. You can change both.
Can I put a siding price on my website?
